THE VOICE IN PROGRESS:
Developing Adolescent Voices
In this “nuts and bolts” session I will explore the issues and challenges of building a healthy adolescent singing voice. I will discuss such topics as why we warm-up, what a daily warm-up plan looks like, and some common mistakes that we all make and how to avoid them. I will examine a number of different exercises that address a variety of vocal challenges, and explore which keys and ranges work best, or not at all, for your various choirs. I will show you how to tailor your warm-ups to each particular age and grade choir. My hope is that this session will provide you with some ideas and warm-ups to help you build your young voices in a healthy, efficient way!
THE VOICE IN RENEWAL
Rebuilding the Aging Voice
In this session we will explore many of the physical, vocal, and musical issues of the aging voice. We will look at the limitations a singer may have with some of the typical church choir literature. We will sing through a number of different exercises to help your choir members perform this music easier, more musically, and with better technique.
FINDING THEIR VOICE
Voice-Charting the Adolescent Male Singer
In this session I will explain what voice-charting is, discuss why voice-charting is imperative to a successful choral program, and, with the help of some young men, I will walk you through, step by step, how I voice chart the changing male voices in my classroom. You will be able to hear, first hand, what to listen for as you are voice-charting your young men. You will also see how I use the chart as a tool to help your young singers advocate for themselves as musicians.
Warming-up Your Church Choir
Developing excellent singing
In this “nuts-and-bolts” session we will discuss topics such as: why we warm up, common mistakes we all make, and look at a basic warm-up outline. You will participate in a “typical” weekly warm up. We will examine and sing through many different exercises that address a variety of vocal challenges. We will also discuss how to get your choir members to “buy-in” to this warm-up time, and you will be given a sample year long warm-up plan.
Selecting Literature
The Key to a Successful Choral Program
This session will focus on the importance of selecting the right music for your choir. While this session focuses on Middle School choir, the same principles apply to any age choir. This is more than just a “How To,” but also a “Why” session. We will discuss why picking out the right music for your choir will help them become a more successful performance ensemble. We will also explore why this will help improve your classroom management. Selecting the right literature will help your choir become more successful, and will improve your classroom management.
Classroom Management in the Middle school ClassrooM
Getting your students to work hard and do what we need them to do can be tricky, especially with Middle School students! In this session you will be given some practical ideas to help you gain and maintain control in your classroom. This ultimately will allow you to develop your choirs to their highest level of excellence.
